Sports Betting Glossary

Sports betting has its own language — a language that can either keep you in the dark or give you a real edge. You don’t need to know hundreds of terms. You only need the ones that matter. The ones sharps use. The ones oddsmakers respect. This glossary isn’t academic. It’s practical. It’s the foundation for understanding lines, reading movement, and spotting value where others see noise.

American Odds
The standard odds format in the US. “–” means favorite, “+” means underdog.

Implied Probability
The market’s estimated probability of an outcome.

Vig / Juice
The sportsbook’s commission built into the odds.

Spread
The margin a team must cover.

Total / Over–Under
The combined score of both teams.

Moneyline
Betting on the winner, no spread.

Handle
Total money wagered on a side.

Tickets
Number of bets placed. Shows public sentiment.

Public Money
Casual bettors’ action. Usually on favorites and overs.

Sharp Money
Respected bettors’ action. Moves lines.

Line Movement
How the odds shift over time.

Steam Move
A sudden, synchronized move across multiple books.

Reverse Line Movement
Line moves opposite of public betting.

Closing Line
The final line before the game starts.

CLV (Closing Line Value)
Beating the closing line is the clearest sign of long‑term skill.

Parlay
Multiple bets combined into one.

Same Game Parlay (SGP)
A parlay built within a single game.

Correlation
When events influence each other. The key to SGP value.

Pace
Game tempo. More possessions = more opportunities.

Usage Rate
Percentage of team possessions a player uses.

Matchup
How teams or players fit against each other.

Prop Bet
A bet on individual performance or specific events.

Alt Lines
Alternative lines with adjusted odds.

Unit
A consistent percentage of your bankroll.

Bankroll
Your betting capital.

Chasing
Trying to recover losses emotionally.

Tilt
Emotional betting after frustration.

Edge
Your advantage over the market.

Value Bet
When the true probability is higher than the implied probability.

Opening Line
The first number posted by the sportsbook.

Middle
A chance to win both sides of a bet.

Hedge
Reducing risk by betting the opposite side.

Limit
Maximum allowed bet.

Handle Percentage
Money distribution across sides.

Live Betting
Betting during the game.

Market Resistance
When a line refuses to move past a number.

Key Numbers
Important thresholds the market respects.

Regression
A return to normal performance after extremes.

If you understand these terms, you understand the market. And once you understand the market, you stop betting like the public and start thinking like a sharp.
